7th Grade English/Literature

English - We had to finish our introduction to MLA citation and plagiarism with what little time we had left. It was fast and furious, but the students should be feeling a little more comfortable with these skills as we head into the library tomorrow for the beginning of our research paper unit. *Note: We did lose 5th hour to an honor roll assembly, so these students may not be as familiar with these skills. I will work with the IMC staff to catch them up the best we can.

Literature - The students read a short story by Gary Soto titled, "Broken Chain." We briefly discussed Gary Soto and his rationale for writing short stories that highlight the hispanic culture. Tomorrow we will begin to look into the main character, Alfonso, and how Soto utilized characterization to provide us with information about him.

I strongly encourage students to utilize their time wisely in literature class. I have many students who are not using the time I give them to read or work on an assignment. It is far too early in the quarter to fall behind!

7/8 Choir

We are beginning Solo and Ensemble rehearsals during half choir. All choir students are expected to bring homework/study materials to half choir (Day B) so that each student or performing group has the opportunity to prepare. Solo and Ensemble is on Saturday, April 5 and all choral students are strongly urged to participate. If a student chooses not to participate in the festival, he/she must at least learn a piece from the solo and ensemble required repertoire. Many students have already coordinated a small ensemble and have selected the piece they are performing. Other students are still waiting to pick a piece and that will be accomplished by the end of January. If a student is in both band and choir, there will be a schedule posted for rehearsals before or after school for students that are not in choir every day. On full choir days (Day A), we will be rehearsing music for our next concert on March 3 and our festival pieces. You will be receiving more information about PEMS' participation in WSMA Solo and Ensemble festival on Friday, April 4. This will be the first time that our Middle School choir has participated in the large ensemble portion of the festival which is very exciting.
