7th Grade Math
Students are working with Algebra equations, finding solutions for the variable. They need to recite the equation mentally to find their solution. Homework: Lesson 1-5, pages 26-27. Problems 14-40 and 42-46. Mid-chapter test, quiz, and notes on Friday.
Pre-Algebra
Students learned how to subtract positive and negative integers. The key concept that was taught today is the foundation on which your son or daughter will be working with throughout the school year. Please, make sure you go over their homework to see that they understand how to add and subtract integers. Homework: Lesson 1-5, pages 30-31. Problems 12-45 and 48-53. Mid-chapter test, quiz, and notes on Friday.
Literature 8
Tuesday we shared our "character descriptions". Today we discussed "Conflict" and worked on it in our Literary Technique packet. We started reading a short Science Fiction story called Contagion in class.

We worked to test 8 "mystery powders in class on Tuesday and finished up today. The students guessed and then found out the true identify of the powders. Thursday they will use what they have learned about their physical and chemical properties to identify a mystery mixture.

Chapter 1 Test today. Graded tests will be returned to students after all students have completed their tests. Grades will be posted on Skyward starting either late today or early tomorrow.
Students who have been absent or were absent today will need to make arrangements to make up the test either before school, during lunch, or after school. Classtime cannot be used to make up the test due to an absence.

Science 7
Today we read chapter 1, section 1 (1.1). We discussed the importance of our atmosphere - how it protects us, helps living things, etc. We talked about what components make up the air/atmosphere around us and why keeping those elements in balance is important. Students also answered the Key Content and Key Terms section in the chapter in class.

Took chapter 1 quiz today. Homework: Practice 1.3 C worksheet. Problems 1-25. Mid-chapter test and notes on Friday.

GRADINGEach student’s Physical Education grade will be based on the total number of points that they earn each grading period.
The Physical Education Grading Point System is as follows:Each student has the opportunity to earn daily points. The points can be earned by being prepared for class (changing into athletic/activity clothes) and giving maximum effort during class. Being healthy and active is the main focus. Limited effort will result in a lowered grade and lower levels of health. The total points earned will be converted to a letter grade.
CLASSESThe Palmyra-Eagle Middle School students will receive Physical Education every other day for the entire school year.LOCKERS and LOCKSEach student will receive a locker and a lock. It is important to keep the locks locked at all times. Although we supervise the entire area, the school is not responsible if items are taken. Also, keep the lock combination confidential. If others happen to learn it, notify the teacher and another lock will be issued. A $5 fee will be assessed if the lock is not turned in at the end of the year.
UNPREPARED POLICY It is very important that each student come prepared to Physical Education. We look forward to being active and having fun, but not being prepared will limit the amount a student can safely accomplish.

Students are allowed 1 no-change day and 3 absent days per quarter. When those numbers are exceeded the students will need to make up the day by performing 20 minutes of activity or their grade will be affected. Make up sheets are available with the PE teachers.
DRESS CODE All students must follow the school dress code and wear clothing appropriate for physical activity. Elastic waist shorts or pants, a t-shirt or sweatshirt, and sneakers are acceptable attire for class. Students who wear clothing that is too reveling will be asked to change into something that is more appropriate. Sneakers should have non-marking soles and must be tied tightly at all times. Since we live in Wisconsin we know the weather can change. Students are encouraged to always be prepared with clothing for outdoor activity as well.JEWELRY POLICY No jewelry will be allowed in physical education classes. Students should lock these items in their locker during class!!PARENT & MEDICAL EXCUSES A note from a parent/guardian excusing a student from class due to minor injury or illness will be accepted for two class periods. If the illness or injury necessitates a longer period of rest, a note from a doctor should be provided. If a student can participate in certain activities but not in others please include that in the note.

Language Arts - 8 (9/08-9/12)
This week we went through our first vocabulary packet. The students received their words on Monday dealing with the root word "duce". The vocabulary packet will be due on Wednesday and the quiz will be on Thursday.
Monday and Tuesday, students will be finishing their introduction speeches. On Wednesday, we are starting an introductory project to the book The Giver where each class will be creating their own society. Friday we begin going to the library for independent reading.

Band
We are starting lessons this week!!! Our small group lessons will start Tuesday morning. I will be assigning the students there lesson material this week so you should hear them practicing it throughout the next week. The exact lesson schedule is still being set, but please ask your child what day there lessons are on. These weekly lessons are a vital part in their musical growth, please help them to be prepared.
Lastly, some students still do not have instruments this makes playing in band very difficult. The school has some instruments for rent, but not an unlimited supply. School rentals are a one time $50 fee and you are then responsible for the repairs. Percussion students have a $25 fee for the wear and tear that is caused on the school instruments that they will play on.

Today in class we took notes and talked about what students know about the air/atmosphere and what they want to know. Students also wrote in his/her notebook the Key Concepts/Terms from Section 1.1 of their Weather book. We will read and discuss the chapter tomorrow. We turned in our first "officially graded" assignment. We began our first lab...Identifying Mystery Powders. The students should finish by Tuesday.

Science 7
In most classes, students received the final instructions on the remainder of the Making Connections packet. Students had time to work on this in class. Again, it was stressed the proper way to diagram (written on a straight line, not diagonal, etc), the use of rulers to make straight lines, the use of proper English, complete sentences, etc. The packet was not assigned to be finished over the weekend, but will be due 9/12/08.

Corrected and collected yesterday's work. Students were encouraged to bring reading material for correction-making time so if they finish early they will not be tempted to distract others or get themselves into trouble. Students should not feel rushed while making corrections so it is important that all students are occupied, especially if they are already done making corrections to their assignments.
Students practiced basic facts in addition today to learn the procedure for taking the time tests. No grade on these since it was a trial run.

Science 7
Today students completed and turned in their bio glyph's (all but 4th hour - they will turn theirs in tomorrow). The bio glyphs are another tool to introduce the concept of a dichotomous key. In addition, it allows for a creative and fun look at the final product due to the directions/steps that have to be followed.
The students also received their Making Connections Packet. This is a long term packet, that will be due on 9/12/08 (next Friday). Each student was to write not only that they received it today, but also that on 9/12/08 that it is due. As a class, we talked about and I explained my expectations and directions for problems #1-12. It is not expected that they complete the packet at home tonight. Rather, the students had some time today to work on the packet in class. Time will be given periodically to the students to work on the packet in class - but as I told all hours, some of the work will need to be done at home.
There are 25 questions in this packet, and they all pertain to each individual student. In addition, there are various ways to receive extra credit points - the students were made aware of them for #1-12. I will let them know about the remaining numbers as we continue through the packet.
The content of the packet again relates the the student and is about his/her life. I listed the requirements for the packet on the first page. But, I will stress again some points. I require COMPLETE SENTENCES, proper grammar and spelling. Along with this is penmanship - this needs to be done neatly. As I told the classes, this isn't a race to see who can finish first, but rather the thought and effort that each student shows in his/her work.

Today in class, each student received his/her book. These books will change throughout the year, as they are a set of four. The students know that by Monday 9/8/08, the books need to be covered. I have paper covers if needed.
We reviewed the different sections of the book, and were really able to look at and discuss many of the intense weather pictures - also led to a great discussion about the current hurricane season!
Finally in class today, the students received a bioglyph. The assignment will be completed in class tomorrow.

We read and discussed chapter 1, section 1 - Themes and Elements of Geography. Students became familiar with the 5 themes and 6 essential elements of geography. We discussed the use of the section reading study guides - these are for student use and to be kept organized by the student. This format gives structure to note taking so students have important information that they can study at home (since the books stay in the classroom).

Grading: A student is given points for correct answers given to questions on daily work, worksheets, experiments (labs – in science), quizzes, tests, and projects. Class discussion, preparedness, and conduct are included in the effort grade. It can be difficult to perform well on tests and assignments when the student is not present for lengthy discussions, explanations, review sessions, and demonstrations. Please review, sign, and send back the Late Work Policy and Behavior Code handout that will be sent home with your child. This document will address deductions of homework handed in tardy.
Late Work Policy:
It is expected that students turn their homework in on time, however I understand that middle school is a new environment and want all students to be successful. If a homework assignment is turned in late it will be the student’s responsibility to attach a missing assignment form to the assignment and then hand it in. Any assignment with a missing assignment form will be deducted 20 percent.
Once a student has turned in three (3) late assignments within the grading period, the percentage of deduction will change to 50 percent for the remainder of the grading period.

Language Arts - 8 (6/9-6/12)
This week there is no vocabulary because vocabulary was wrapped up last week. Monday will be a day to work on the finishing touches of the creative myths. Tuesday, 4th-6th hour will have a convention where all the creative gods, goddesses, and heroes will gather to tell their tales. Wednesday will be the convention day for third hour, so bring your stories, illustrations, and dress-up for extra credit!
Applied Math
Students finished their paper knot and Sierpinski Carpet projects - those students who were already done were allowed to play math games on pre-approved web sites.
Social Studies 8
Students completed and presented their WWII radio broadcasts. We also turned our books in today - no more lugging those heavy things around!

Language Arts - 8 (6/2-6/6)
This week is the last week of vocabulary. Our words deal with the roots "voc" and "clam", meaning "to call out" or "to cry out". Included in the final vocabulary quiz on Friday will be all the roots, prefixes, and suffixes we have done in the past so make sure to review all previous packets. We will also do a review in class.
This week we will continue our mythology unit and work on creative assignments dealing with Greek mythology. Tuesday we will receive pictures of Greek myths and make up a story that we think explains the picture. Wednesday and Thursday we will receive the story of six myths that will be acted out in front of the class. Then, everyone will be responsible for creating a myth of their own.
