Social Studies 8
Today we reviewed Section 1 - Population Geography. We discussed how the economy is related to populations and resources available. We also discussed the four main sectors of economies around the world.
Assignment: No Textbook Needed - Economics/Math Worksheet. For the Math side, students will calculate population densities for 8 countries - divide the population by the area - then graph the results in a bar graph. For the Economics side, students will need to find the jobs that their parents and grandparents have/had and then catagorize them into primary, secondary, tertiary, or quaternary services. We will discuss the results in class tomorrow. The purpose is to see if the economy in our area has changed over time.

Students took a POP Notebook Quiz on section 1.2. The quiz was based upon their homework that was to be done in their notebooks. If they completed the homework, the quiz was no problem :)

Science 7
Today was the final day for the measurement lab. All students know that if they still need to complete the lab, they need to come in on their own time to finish (i.e. study hall, before or after school, etc.) Groups discussed the question, does air have mass? They were given a few "tools" to demonstrate their answer. Each group had to problem solve, work together and use discovery learning in order to succeed. These groups then presented their findings to the class.
We began section 1.2 today (Chapter 1, section 2). The homework was to complete the reading and answer the Key Concept and Key Terms on page 10. The questions/terms need to be written in and answered in their notebook. REMEMBER...Bring your notebook to class tomorrow - no passes out to get them(hint, hint)!

We finished up "Dialect" today and discussed "Dialogue". A short writing assignment was given...most students finished during class.

Discussed Career X-word assignment. A vocabulary list was provided to help those still "searching" for the correct answers. A second, more student friendly, career matching assignment is due on Wednesday. We are preparing for our first test on Friday!

Today we discussed Dialect. The students listened to a folktale told with a southern drawl. Literary Technique packet work time was provided.

We corrected Chapter 1.3 review assignment "Why Study Science?" and discussed careers in science. Assignment is a crossword dealing with careers in the science field. The students will have to look outside of the text (Internet, encyclopedia, dictionary, etc.) to complete this assignment.

Today student continued to work on the measurement lab. They had an opportunity to work together as a team to accomplish a common goal and to work on accuracy. Most students enjoyed the hands on work and worked well.
I also returned the GRS 1.1 that was turned in last week. All corrections are due tomorrow. We are moving on to air mass and density tomorrow.

Today we discussed an upcoming project called Science Showcase. It is not due until October 27...but I wanted the kids to have plenty of time. Ask your child about it!

We continued our discussion about the atmosphere and its components. Students completed their KWL notes. They also received a GRS for section 1.1. It is due tomorrow, they had time to work on it in class to complete most of it. Remember, Making Connections is due at the beginning of class on FRIDAY.

Reviewed Algebra equations and inequalities. Homework: Lesson 1.4, pages 27-30. Problems 14-54 even and 56-76 all. Mid-chapter test and notes on Friday.

Students are working with Algebra equations, finding solutions for the variable. They need to recite the equation mentally to find their solution. Homework: Lesson 1-5, pages 26-27. Problems 14-40 and 42-46. Mid-chapter test, quiz, and notes on Friday.

Students learned how to subtract positive and negative integers. The key concept that was taught today is the foundation on which your son or daughter will be working with throughout the school year. Please, make sure you go over their homework to see that they understand how to add and subtract integers. Homework: Lesson 1-5, pages 30-31. Problems 12-45 and 48-53. Tuesday we shared our "character descriptions". Today we discussed "Conflict" and worked on it in our Literary Technique packet. We started reading a short Science Fiction story called Contagion in class.

We worked to test 8 "mystery powders in class on Tuesday and finished up today. The students guessed and then found out the true identify of the powders. Thursday they will use what they have learned about their physical and chemical properties to identify a mystery mixture.

Today we read chapter 1, section 1 (1.1). We discussed the importance of our atmosphere - how it protects us, helps living things, etc. We talked about what components make up the air/atmosphere around us and why keeping those elements in balance is important. Students also answered the Key Content and Key Terms section in the chapter in class.

GRADINGEach student’s Physical Education grade will be based on the total number of points that they earn each grading period.
The Physical Education Grading Point System is as follows:Each student has the opportunity to earn daily points. The points can be earned by being prepared for class (changing into athletic/activity clothes) and giving maximum effort during class. Being healthy and active is the main focus. Limited effort will result in a lowered grade and lower levels of health. The total points earned will be converted to a letter grade.
CLASSESThe Palmyra-Eagle Middle School students will receive Physical Education every other day for the entire school year.LOCKERS and LOCKSEach student will receive a locker and a lock. It is important to keep the locks locked at all times. Although we supervise the entire area, the school is not responsible if items are taken. Also, keep the lock combination confidential. If others happen to learn it, notify the teacher and another lock will be issued. A $5 fee will be assessed if the lock is not turned in at the end of the year.
UNPREPARED POLICY It is very important that each student come prepared to Physical Education. We look forward to being active and having fun, but not being prepared will limit the amount a student can safely accomplish.

Students are allowed 1 no-change day and 3 absent days per quarter. When those numbers are exceeded the students will need to make up the day by performing 20 minutes of activity or their grade will be affected. Make up sheets are available with the PE teachers.
DRESS CODE All students must follow the school dress code and wear clothing appropriate for physical activity. Elastic waist shorts or pants, a t-shirt or sweatshirt, and sneakers are acceptable attire for class. Students who wear clothing that is too reveling will be asked to change into something that is more appropriate. Sneakers should have non-marking soles and must be tied tightly at all times. Since we live in Wisconsin we know the weather can change. Students are encouraged to always be prepared with clothing for outdoor activity as well.JEWELRY POLICY No jewelry will be allowed in physical education classes. Students should lock these items in their locker during class!!PARENT & MEDICAL EXCUSES A note from a parent/guardian excusing a student from class due to minor injury or illness will be accepted for two class periods. If the illness or injury necessitates a longer period of rest, a note from a doctor should be provided. Language Arts - 8 (9/08-9/12)
This week we went through our first vocabulary packet. The students received their words on Monday dealing with the root word "duce". The vocabulary packet will be due on Wednesday and the quiz will be on Thursday.
Monday and Tuesday, students will be finishing their introduction speeches. On Wednesday, we are starting an introductory project to the book The Giver where each class will be creating their own society. Friday we begin going to the library for independent reading.

Band
We are starting lessons this week!!! Our small group lessons will start Tuesday morning. I will be assigning the students there lesson material this week so you should hear them practicing it throughout the next week. The exact lesson schedule is still being set, but please ask your child what day there lessons are on. These weekly lessons are a vital part in their musical growth, please help them to be prepared.
Lastly, some students still do not have instruments this makes playing in band very difficult. The school has some instruments for rent, but not an unlimited supply. School rentals are a one time $50 fee and you are then responsible for the repairs. Percussion students have a $25 fee for the wear and tear that is caused on the school instruments that they will play on.

In most classes, students received the final instructions on the remainder of the Making Connections packet. Students had time to work on this in class. Again, it was stressed the proper way to diagram (written on a straight line, not diagonal, etc), the use of rulers to make straight lines, the use of proper English, complete sentences, etc. The packet was not assigned to be finished over the weekend, but will be due 9/12/08.

Students were encouraged to bring reading material for correction-making time so if they finish early they will not be tempted to distract others or get themselves into trouble. Students should not feel rushed while making corrections so it is important that all students are occupied, especially if they are already done making corrections to their assignments.
