Science 8

Today we had time to finish the lab from page 76.
The students were assigned a review assignment on page 84 (16-26) Due Monday.
The students were also given words to place on their Bingo Review card. **If they define these vocabulary words they will not only earn extra credit they will also be reviewing key concepts from the chapter. The extra credit is due Monday as well. ***Any absent students can still make the bingo card if they have their textbook...the words are the key terms listed on page 82.
Test Chapter 2 on Wednesday 10/8.

Social Studies 8


Chapter 4 is only 2 sections long so we are already half way through! Today we began reviewing Section 1 for the test. Students were again reminded that all late work needs to be turned in today due to Progress Reports - if it is not turned in it will become a 0 (zero). Students were also reminded that beginning in Chapter 5, notes (reading study guides and overhead worksheets) will be graded for completion - pass/fail, no inbetween. Monday we will have a practice check of the Chapter 4 materials so students will know what to improve before chapter 5 begins.

Science 7

Today some classes had a presentation from the Guidance Department, while other classes had a chance to work on their flying contraptions. There are some very interesting designs so far!

Yesterday the students received GRS 2.2, and it was due for today. However, due to our presentations and lab, we will not go over them until Monday.


No homework for tonight, besides bringing in any/all material they want to use for the flying contraption :)

Lesson 1-8: The Metric System

Students are already somewhat familiar with the metric system thanks to Science class. Today, we reviewed the steps to take to convert measurements within the metric system.

Social Studies 8


Chapter 3 Test scores were posted today. The actual tests will be handed back once all students have completed them.

Today we reviewed and discussed Chapter 4, Section 1 about culture. Culture involves characteristics such as religion and language and is learned from family and friends through observation or direct teaching.

Students were made aware that beginning with Chapter 5, all study guides and overhead worksheets will be checked for a grade at least once per chapter. This is a pass/fail grade - students who have all notes completed will receive 100%. Notes that are incomplete will receive a zero (0). There will be no "almost" score.

Assignment: All Late Work should be completed and submitted for Progress Report Grades. Complete the Chapter 4 Map/Graph worksheets dealing with early cultural centers of the world, and adherents of the 5 main world religions.

Health 7

Students were introduced to passive, assertive and aggressive communication styles today. We also discussed ways to resolve conflict and did some role-playing in class.
No homework.

Health 8

Today (9/30 & 10/1) students participated in an aerobic workout. During the workout, they took their pulse every five mintues and recorded their heart rates on a handout. Students are to graph the data they collected to analyze what happened to their heart rate during the activity and to see if they kept their heart rate in their target heart rate zone.
The handout is due Thursday/Friday.

Social Studies 8


Chapter 3 Test!!

This test will be the last grade entered in the grade book before progress reports. There are many students who did not take the test today due to absences. These students will need to make up the test by Friday outside of class (lunch, before or after school, or study hall).

Class time after the test was to be used to complete and submit any missing work from Chapter 3.

Assignment: Read Chapter 4, People and Culture: Section 1 - What is Culture? (p. 86-95) and complete the Study Guide.

Today we corrected our metric practice sheet and had some extra conversion practice playing Metric War card game.
Quiz chapter 2 is tomorrow...all worksheets are allowed as notes.

I will be gone at a conference tomorrow...all students should plan on taking the quiz as it doesn't cover any new information. Students can expect an assignment tomorrow after the quiz and should be on their best behavior.

Science 8

All M-n-M data is due today. I provided today as a work day for those students who were not completed with all of their work. A metric practice assignment was also given for homework.

6th hour was interrupted by an assembly so they were given until Tuesday to complete all graphs. The metric measurement assignment is still due on Tuesday for them as well.

Literature 8

We read most of Part II of "Flowers for Algernon" in class. The students were asked to finish reading it for Tuesday.

Health 7

Students were introduced to "I-messages" . Each student received a worksheet with several situations in which they had to write an "I-message" as a response to handling anger. Students were challenged to use an "I-message" before the next class period when they are confronted with a situation that makes them angry.
Students were given two extra-credit puzzles to work on in class.

Health 8

REad pp. 98-102. Students received an extra credit worksheet with two puzzles, one dealing with the muscles and the other with the skeletal system.
Students should continues studying all notes and diagrams.

Science 7

Students began to brainstorm and come up with various ideas of creating a flying contraption (like a kite), that can sustain flight. Students are in groups, free to bring in any "junk" from home. I DO NOT want students to go and buy materials, this is an opportunity for them to use what material they have to create. There will be no fire, fireworks, fuse lighting, etc. Students must work with group at school, no pre-constructed materials unless ok'd by me.
We will not only try flight but also to take wind measurements with our creations. The imagination is key in this project :)

Algebra

No homework. Went assembly on internet safety.

7th Grade Math

We watched the beginning of Planet Earth by the BBC. This is an extraordinary series that we will be watching throughout the year.

Each student needs to have 4 products turned in on Monday. A data chart, Bar, Line and Pie graph showing the results from their candy sample. Friday is a work day to complete the lab.

We discussed "foreshadowing" in literature and began reading "Flowers for Algernon". This is a short story in our Literature Textbook based on the novel by Daniel Keyes.

Students provided information to consruct a chart on the board about the economic sectors that Grandpas and Grandmas, and Moms and Dads have or currently work in. Students compared the graphs to see how the economy has been changing or SHIFTING.


We viewed a 7 minute video called "Shift Happens" that discussed how the population is different in different areas of the world, how the economy is changing due to technological advances, and other facts about the world today that help to put the importance of preparing for a role in a global community into perspective.


Assignment: Read Chapter 3, Section 2 (p. 67-71) and complete the cherry colored study guide.

7th Grade Math

We finished taking the last of our notes on the "layers of the atmosphere". Additionally, students read in groups section 1.4 and answered the Key Terms/Concepts. If they were not done in class (which they were given time to do), then it is homework and due tomorrow.

Today we reviewed Section 1 - Population Geography. We discussed how the economy is related to populations and resources available. We also discussed the four main sectors of economies around the world.

Assignment: No Textbook Needed - Economics/Math Worksheet. For the Math side, students will calculate population densities for 8 countries - divide the population by the area - then graph the results in a bar graph. For the Economics side, students will need to find the jobs that their parents and grandparents have/had and then catagorize them into primary, secondary, tertiary, or quaternary services. We will discuss the results in class tomorrow. The purpose is to see if the economy in our area has changed over time.

Students took a POP Notebook Quiz on section 1.2. The quiz was based upon their homework that was to be done in their notebooks. If they completed the homework, the quiz was no problem :)
In some classes we were able to discuss density, altitude, air pressure, etc. We will continue tomorrow.

Science 7

Today was the final day for the measurement lab. All students know that if they still need to complete the lab, they need to come in on their own time to finish (i.e. study hall, before or after school, etc.) Groups discussed the question, does air have mass? They were given a few "tools" to demonstrate their answer. Each group had to problem solve, work together and use discovery learning in order to succeed. These groups then presented their findings to the class.

We began section 1.2 today (Chapter 1, section 2). The homework was to complete the reading and answer the Key Concept and Key Terms on page 10. The questions/terms need to be written in and answered in their notebook. REMEMBER...Bring your notebook to class tomorrow - no passes out to get them(hint, hint)!

Literature 8

We finished up "Dialect" today and discussed "Dialogue". A short writing assignment was given...most students finished during class.

Science 8

Discussed Career X-word assignment. A vocabulary list was provided to help those still "searching" for the correct answers. A second, more student friendly, career matching assignment is due on Wednesday. We are preparing for our first test on Friday!

Applied Math 7
