I continued to read "Contagion" to the class. I asked each student to predict the ending of the story today. We will share those before reading the end of the story in class on Thursday.
Social Studies 8
Groups presented information about their person related to the Declaration of Independence. The Socratic Seminar on the Declaration was introduced.
Assignment: Carefully and thoughtfully read the Declaration of Independence keeping in mind that you will be asked to share your insight tomorrow. Complete the Ticket which asks students to identify the four main reasons for declaring independence from England according to the Declaration.

Today we started our Water Erosion and land form labs. We will be continuing this for the next few days!

Today some classes continued to work on the History readings while other classes watch a documentary on primary sources.

Lesson 6.3, pages 349-351. Problems 12-38 even, 39,40,45,50,62,65 and quiz 1 1-15. Quiz and test on Friday.

Out Alien Taxonomic Key was corrected today and a 5 Kingdom/domain review chart was filled in collectively as a class. A copy will be made available for absent students.

Today's assignment was corrected. We began reading a science fiction short story together in class. "Contagion"
Social Studies 8
Today students worked in their groups to research an American that was influential to the writing of the Declaration of Independence. Students were instructed to research ideas and opinions of these people and find out how they are related to the Declaraion of Independence. Americans that students researched included Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Paine, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Abigail Adams. Students will be presenting their information to the class tomorrow.

We have completed taking notes and are still discussing water erosion and deposition, chapter 3 section 2. We will hopefully begin our lab tomorrow, please remember to bring in newspaper, paint and/or paint brushes if you have any available.

Students worked together to review the taxes and regulations imposed on American colonists by the British. Then groups worked through p. 112-116 of their textbooks to determine the British actions and America reactions that began the American Revolution.

Students learned major causes of the American Revolution, focusing especially on the taxes and regulations issued on the American Colonists by the English government. Students worked in groups to become experts on their assigned taxes or regulationsby answering the questions (1) What was taxed or regulated? (2) Why did the British government feel this was necessary? and (3) What were the results of this tax or regulation?

Part 2 of the Boston Massacre Simulation today. Students took on new roles as textbook editors and worked through "first hand evidence" (yesterday's work) from the Boston Massacre to piece together what really happened. The in-class assignment for today was to write a 50 word textbook entry about the Boston Massacre.

We have been learning about erosion and deposition during the past few days. Today the students took the first half of notes on water erosion. No new assignments coming home tonight.
Social Studies 8
Today we discussed Secondary and Primary Sources of historical information. We brainstormed examples of primary sources and identified how sources could be bias. Students participated in the first part of a simulation about the Boston Massacre. Students were assigned roles, viewed footage, and then were to produce "first-hand evidence" based on their character assignment. These pieces of evidence were due in class. No homework.

We viewed the final 10 minutes of the Era of Colonization video. We talked about good discussion etiquette ("I agree with... because..." or "I disagree with... because..."). Students discussed the view of the English regarding their Native American neighbors, customs of the Puritans, the Proclamation of 1763, as well as examples of freedom and slavery in the new world. There were some great discussions today!

The journal can be either a small spiral notebook, a composition journal or a diary-type journal. They will use this to make daily/weekly entries. Journals will be collected and graded every other week.

Social Studies 8
Second Semester in Social Studies brings the switch to U.S. History. The classroom has been rearranged to allow for group work and small group discussions. Students were informed that participation, discussions, and short writing responses are going to be large parts of their grade this semester, so it's important to be in class, and to pay attention to what's going on. Students will also need to make sure that they always bring something to write with, and something to write on every day. Textbooks will be distributed later in the week, once they are needed, because they are heavy!
Today, students viewed a video that summarized the Era of Colonization in the United States. Students were given a study guide on which to take notes. A discussion will follow the video... possibly starting today, but most likely continuing in to tomorrow. Participation in the discussion as well as notes taken on the study guide will combine to form the first grade.

The students were able to see their test grades today. We discussed the test, and students were allowed to make corrections to the test. Also today, students received the final paper on Weathering and Soil Formation. This assignment is due on Monday.

Showcase Presentations finished up today. Another great showing on the part of my students. Unfortunately some students choose not to complete this assignment.
The chapter 4 quiz is tomorrow. Students can define the key terms on page 132 for extra credit and can then use them as notes on the quiz.

We again reviewed every entry that should be in the science notebook that will be collected tomorrow for the quarter 2 grade. There are a total of 9 assignments that I will be checking. We have gone over the assignments/entries that are expected to be included and the format needed.
