Algebra

Solving multi-step equations! Students were taught how to use multiple steps toward isolating their variable in linear equations. Homework: Lesson 3.3 Part1, page 148. Problems 10-36.

Pre-Algebra and & 7th Grade Math

The students were given assignment packets to go over the first lessons of chapter three. Most of the students had time to complete them in class.
Most of the science classes continued their work on the water cycle poster. These posters will be done by Monday - in class. 1st hour did not work on their posters today, as they had breakfast and watched Monster House with Mr. Whitmore's first hour class (celebration of our pig races!).

Today students needed to have any missing or late homework turned in for the Heat Transfer and Wind unit (we had the test last week Thursday). Earlier this week I sat with each student and told him/her what was missing. This is also posted in the back of the room continuously.

And finally, notebooks were collected from the students to grade the Atmosphere and Heat/Wind notes/homework.

Have a great few days off...enjoy the "warmer" weather...and don't stay up too late waiting for the "great pumpkin!" And as always, Make Good Choices!

Applied Math 7

Class began with a discussion about behavior during yesterday's guidance session. This class received a very poor report on behavior and there was a complete lack of respect for the guidance counselors putting on the session. Since this class cannot be trusted unless directly supervised by Ms. Francoeur, hall pass and bathroom pass privilieges have been revoked during 6th Hour. Students may individually earn these privileges back by proving that they can be truisted to make corrections on their homework.
Today we corrected Lesson 22 and practiced basic facts in addition and multiplication.

Applied Math 8

Due to the low scores from Monday's assignment (average 39%) today we reviewed mean, median, and mode. We discussed that the mean (average) should never be bigger than the largest number in a data set, the importance of putting the numbers in order from smallest to largest when finding the median (middle number), and we reviewed that the mode is the number that shows up the most.
Assignment: finish correcting Monday's assignment, and correct the packet from Tuesday. This is the only opportunity to correct Tuesday's packet.

Science 8

The last of our showcases were presented. All lab work not finished (from last week) should finally be in the basket. An extra credit microscope word-find was also passed out for extra credit. Have a safe long weekend!

Applied Math 8

Class time was given to complete yesterday's assignment since many students had not completed it. Calculators are very useful in this math class. Students are encouraged to bring them to class. If a student doesn't have a calculator by 8th grade, now would be a good time to get one.
Today's assignment: 2-4 packet - due tomorrow

Social Studies 8

Today we reviewed and discussed Chapter 6, Section 3 about the cultural diversity of Canada. We also discussed the differences between diversity in the U.S. ( a melting pot) and in Canada ( most ethnic groups live together in certain regions and adhere to their own traditions - not a lot of cultural blending).

Assignment: Read Chapter 6, Section 4 (p. 177-180) and complete the notes, terms, and skillbuilder on the study guide. The Chapter 6 Vocabulary Practice worksheet is due tomorrow.

Assignment: p. 71-72 #4-17, and #20-23

Social Studies 8

Today students reviewed Chapter 6 for the test which will be next Wednesday. We discussed that since we do not always have access to an overhead projetor, studying for next Tuesday's map quiz will be the student's responsibility. Graded outline maps were returned today so students can make corrections to the maps they will be studying.

We also discussed that next Wednesday is the end of the Quarter. Any assignment that is not turned in by next Wednesday becomes a zero, no exceptions. For example, if you do not turn in next Tuesday's assignment on Wednesday, it becomes a zero, just like any work that has been missng from throughout the quarter, regardless of the date it was assigned.

Almost all of the hour today (except about 10 minutes) was devoted to work time so students can complete today's assignments as well as any missing work that is still out.

Today's assignment: Read Section 3 (p. 171) and complete the notes, terms, and skillbuilder portions of the study guide. Complete the Chapter 6 Connect to History worksheet.

Review of Chapter 6, Section 2: the regional differences, diversity, and history of Canada.

Reviewed the location of Canada's provinces on the overhead (thanks, Mrs. Moran, for letting us borrow yours!). Classes who review features loud enough to have someone from a different class come down to our class to ask us to be quiet earn extra credit points! Classes must tell "the complainer" why we are being so loud - example: we are reviewing the provinces of Canada!

Assignment: Complete the Chapter 6 Map & Graph/Skillbuilder packet - due Monday, no book required

Language Arts - 8

Reminder: Voice packets need to be finished before class on Monday.

SCIENCE SHOWCASE IS DUE MONDAY!

Literature 8

We reviewed the book to date. A chapter 5-7 review assignment was given. All should have finished in class. The kids were assigned to read Chapter 8 for homework!

Applied Math 7

Class began with a discussion about making corrections. The procedure is that students exchange papers and mark which problems have been missed on an assignment. Then, students get their own papers back and have the opportunity to ask questions, get help, and make corrections on missed problems BEFORE submitting the assignment for a final grade. There is NO REASON a student could not have 100% on every assignment. It was pointed out to students that it is not the teacher's responsibility to make sure they are correcting every problem before submitting - it is the student's responsibility to take advantage of the opportunity. When asked why corrections weren't being made suggestions from students were laziness (just not caring) and frustration with having to redo a problem. We discussed these suggestions and many students decided that it would be worthwhile to ask for help the first time they didn't understand a problem, and then they wouldn't have to try it again later.

Today we went over Lesson 21: Solving Equations - this lesson was mostly a review about how to find missing numbers.
  • If you are missing and addend, subtract
  • If you are missing the top number in a subtraction problem, add
  • If you are missing the bottom number in a subtraction problem, subtract
  • If you are missing a factor (multiplication), divide

Assignment: Lesson 21 worksheet

Applied Math 8

Lesson 2-3: Line Plots
We discussed how to make line plots and how to organize and summarize data on line plots.
Terms to remember:
  1. Range: the difference between the lowest and highest numbers
  2. Intervals: remember they must all be the same (25,20,35 NOT 25, 30, 40)
  3. Clusters: data close together
  4. Outliers: quite seperate from the rest of the data
  5. Gaps: big spaces between data

Assignment: p. 66 #5-21

Social Studies 7

The students had the entire class time to work on the Unit 3 Psychology test. Also, any projects were due today...this has been written on the board (both Mr.Whitmore's and Mrs. Moran's) and the students have been reminded daily of the deadline.

There is no homework tonight for Social Studies (whew!)

Social Studies 8

Sadly, our beloved overhead projector (Big Stinky) has died. Until he is either repaired or replaced, we will have to improvise a little when it comes to reviewing locations on the map of Canada.

Canada outline maps were due today.

We reviewed Chapter 6, Section 1 about the 4 regions of Canada: The Atlantic Provinces, The Core Provinces, The Prairie Provinces (with Ms. Francouer's favorite province name ever: Saskatchewan) and British Columbia and the Territories.

Applied Math 7

Today it was discussed with students that when we are checking assignments, it is the checker's job ONLY to mark problems that are wrong, NOT to write the correct answer on the assignment. It is each student's responsibilities to correct their OWN paper. At this point, since there have been more than a few instances of cheating rather than correcting, if Ms. Francoeur is not thoroughly convinced that each student made their own corrections, the student will not receive points back on the correction.
Today Lesson 16 - Reducing Fractions Part 1 was covered
Assignment: complete the Lesson 16 worksheet and ALL LATE WORK

Applied Math 8

Today it was discussed with students that when we are checking assignments, it is the checker's job ONLY to mark problems that are wrong, NOT to write the correct answer on the assignment. It is each student's responsibilities to correct their OWN paper. At this point, since there have been more than a few instances of cheating rather than correcting, if Ms. Francoeur is not thoroughly convinced that each student made their own corrections, the student will not receive points back on the correction.
Time was given in class today to complete Friday's assignment.
Today's homework: Complete the Chapter 1 review and vocab due tomorrow.
Study for the test tomorrow!

Language Arts - 8 (10/14-10/17)

This week students are back to their normal vocabulary schedule and the root for the week is "port." The packet is due Wednesday with the quiz on Thursday.

We will also be wrapping up The Giver unit this week with our final movie projects. I have seen some very creative ideas and I am looking forward to watching the presentations on Tuesday. After the movie presentations, we will be watching a science fiction movie with similar ideas and themes as The Giver.

And Then There Were None...

I read a short biography about our author: Agatha Christie.

The students were assigned to read Chapter 1 and fill in the character chart. We will discuss it tomorrow.

Science 8

We began work on a cell brochure today. All work is due on Thursday at the end of class.

Note: Students will have access to a word processor at school. They need to be productive during the work time provided in class.

7th Grade Math

Lesson 2-5, pages 78-79. Problems 11-21 and 24-32.

Pre-Algebra and Algebra

Students were finishing up their tests today because of the shorten day on Friday. No homework.

Social Studies 8

Today we corrected our United States outline maps - we put a big map up on the overhead and students took turns pointing out the locations that were on the assignment with the fancy schmancy pointers. Students who were absent Friday, or who had not completed the assignment, had the chance to make sure labels were correct.
Outline maps were turned in today - they will be graded. Graded maps will be returned tomorrow so students can use them to study for the map quiz.

Assignment: Read Section 2 (p. 131-137) and complete the Reading Study Guide. Make sure terms are circled where they appear in the study guide, or defined on a seperate piece of paper. Also, complete the skillbuilder at the bottom of the study guide. Notes will be checked either Thursday or Friday.
Also...Chapter 4 tests were passed back today and new grade sheets were posted. There is already missing work since progress reports. Students were reminded that assignment grades lose 10% every day they are late. Get your late work done and turn it in to help your quarter grade!
