This week we have been reviewing all of the information from Chapter 3 - Erosion and Deposition. The students made memory cards/concentration cards, we used Inspiration to make outlines and played a review game today. The test is on Monday 3/2/09, you need to study over the weekend!

Students reviewed the ideas of the Wilmot Proviso and Popular Sovereignty as they related to allowing or banning slavery from the territories in the West. Today, students identified the results of the Compromise of 1850, and compared key peoples' ideas about slavery in the territories (including David Wilmot, Jefferson Davis, Henry Clay, and John C. Calhoun).

HOMEWORK: Complete the packet including a review of Section 1, a biography of Dred Scott, and graphing economic differences between the north and the south. This can be turned in today if completed, otherwise it is due on Monday.

Students took notes on alternatives to conflict and the seven steps to problem solving. Students were to apply the seven steps of problem solving to an recent conflict. This should be in writing and is due next Monday.

Students finished reading about the cardiovascular system and were to complete study guides for both reading sections: pp. 78-84 and pp. 85-89.
Students will have a test next week,Wednesday, covering the skeletal system, muscular system and cardiovascular system. I encourage students to start studying this weekend.

This week in language arts, we are writing personal narratives. Last week we brought in a picture that reminded us of an important experience, and that is the basis of the narrative. The typed rough draft is due on Wednesday and the final essay will be due on Tuesday, February 17th. There will be extra credit offered to those who get their narrative edited by an adult.

There is no vocabulary this week because I want the students focused on producing their essays.

Students began an inquiry into why the American colonists were able to defeat the British in the American Revolution. Students viewed a short video about the advatages the British Empire had coming into the Revolution and then formes hypotheses as to why the colonists were able to defeat the British.

The students have completed the paper mache for the water erosion lab, and are done painting. On Monday they will complete the labeling of this project and will give a brief description of what they made.

Social Studies 7

Today we corrected the Unit 7 History Quiz.
The students also received the information on the upcoming Language Arts/Social Studies project that they will be completing over the next 3 weeks. All aspects of this project are to be done at school, there should not be a reason for the research/writing of this paper to be done at home. The students will have 2 periods a day to be working on the project. The assignment that the students have over the weekend is to choose their top 3 subjects that they would like to report on. The topics will be due on Monday.

Science 8

Our classification lab was completed. I introduced chapter 1 section 4 today and a short review assignment was given. Those students who used their work time finished the assignment during class.

We finished Contagion...discussed the plot of the story and completed review questions. There was more than enough time to finish the review today during class! No homework if questions are completed.

Today students participated in a Socratic Seminar about the Declaration of Independence. The Socratic Seminar is a discussion model that allows students to learn from each other's ideas and opinions about a common text (in this case, the Declaration). The format is different than a class discussion - students sit in a circle, facing each other, and it is not necessary to raise hands.

Assignment: Complete the self-evaluation and 2-paragraph response to today's discussion - DUE TOMORROW

Students viewed a video dealing with anger triggers and cues. They must complete Is It Really Anger? before Monday.

Groups presented information about their person related to the Declaration of Independence. The Socratic Seminar on the Declaration was introduced.

Assignment: Carefully and thoughtfully read the Declaration of Independence keeping in mind that you will be asked to share your insight tomorrow. Complete the Ticket which asks students to identify the four main reasons for declaring independence from England according to the Declaration.

Students were instructed to research ideas and opinions of these people and find out how they are related to the Declaraion of Independence. Americans that students researched included Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Paine, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Abigail Adams. Students will be presenting their information to the class tomorrow.
