Social Studies 8
Students viewed and evaluated the class averages for yesterday's map test. We discussed that at this point in the year, it is each student's responsibility to be studying for their map tests. The remaining projects we are doing this semester are very time-intensive and Mr. Whitmore and Ms. Francoeur would prefer to have students be responsible for studying for map tests, rather than taking class time to "force" students to study.
Students completed a study guide about the "Australia" video which previews our next unit.
The Oceania Map Test is scheduled for Friday, January 7. This is the first Friday back from break. The Oceania Map Test only consists of 15 points. It is important that students STUDY for this test OUTSIDE of class.

Literature 7
I just wanted to leave a quick note regarding literature grades in Skyward:
If you have been checking literature grades and they seem extremely low, rest assured it is because I have not entered some of the larger assignments the students have been working on. Right now, the students' grades are merely a reflection of whatever they may have scored on their reading quizzes in class. This is not a reflection of what the grades will be once the other assignments are scored and entered over Thanksgiving break.
Thanks!
-- Mrs. Leal Tortomasi

If they don't have the book at home, they can just wait until Monday to answer that question.

Today, students were given computer lab time to read through the responses posted by their classmates. Then, students were to respond to/evaluate the responses of other students from their class. The goal being that each response be spectacular due to the orginial post plus the constructive comments from classmates. Students were given starting examples of how to comment constructively such as "I would add the following to this post..." or "I disagree with this post because..." or "I think this is a good post because..." Students were challenged to come up with more to say than something like "I disagree with this post because it is wrong" and to instead add or correct information to make a quality response to the posted question.

Review for Eastern Europe Map Test (Thursday, November 4).
Ch. 14, Section 1 was read and discussed as a class. Students were introduced to this unit's project. Each section of Social Studies will be participating in a class blog about topics learned about in our Eastern Europe unit. Blogs encourage students to share their viewpoints and opinions without actually having to share them in person in front of the rest of the class. It also helps to eliminate being interrupted by another student and helps to make sure that all students are heard. Blogs are being used more and more in today's education - especially at the college level so we are excited to be giving students this opportunity.
Students were given a purple sheet with the questions that are on the blog. This week students are reading and discussing Chapter 14 (Eastern Europe) and preparing their answers to post to the blog.
Next week, students will post their responses and then respond to and evaluate classmates' posts.

Also, if you have Skyward access and notice that the literature grades are unusually low, it is because I have had a rash of students not turning things in. These grades can always be changed; however, I wanted to put in the missing grades as a reminder for students.

Students received a late work slip on Wednesday (if they had missing work). If additional work was not handed in on Thursday or Friday, that can be checked on skyward, as I did not print out another individual late/missing assignment slip.
