Students worked on evaluating different types of technical writing as they prepare to begin writing their own. There will be a substitute tomorrow as I am going in for knee surgery; however, the students understand they will be following a planning guide tomorrow and beginning to compose their rough draft in class. I'm excited for these; some of the topics are highly entertaining!
Literature -- We filled out an anticipation guide as we prepare to read Freak the Mighty. Because of the fact that there is a substitute tomorrow, students will begin reading the novel and filling out a study guide with the first few chapters. We will have time to discuss these when I return.

While Ms. Francoeur was away at conferences students were supposed to complete a study guide as well as the Chapter 3 test. There have been some incidents brought to my attention where students have either (1) not chosen to complete the study guide and use their notes instead - which was clearly outlined as not permissable - or (2) students have been "sharing" study guides - either letting friends copy without doing the work, or passing off their study guides to friends after they already took the test. In order to keep this from happening again, and to encourage students to take a more active role in their learning, some changes for the next chapter (chapter 4 - the American Revolution) were announced today.
1. Notes for students will be much less detailed to encourage students to practice reading for information skills and studying on a more frequent basis.
2. Notes and study guides will not be allowed on the test - studying is required.
3. For this chapter, students will also have individual presentations to complete. Requirements and topic choices were distributed today. These presentations will offer students the opportunity to further research one of the many important people, battles, or documents covered in this chapter.
Also today we went through the main ideas of Chapter 4, Section 1
Assignment: Read Section 1 (p. 112-116) and answer the assessment questions 1-4 on p. 116. Start looking over topics you are interested in - topic choosing is on Friday - names will be drawn in random order.

We discussed our characterization & setting quizzes. Students have the option to retake this quiz all week. They just need to let me know when they will be coming in and they can have another shot at it. I am hoping that many students will take me up on this offer and not just settle for a "passing" grade.
We also discussed and worked a little more with plot order (chronological & flashback) as well as foreshadowing.

Tests were handed back with the option to correct for those students who received a failing grade.
Since there has been a continuing trend of students not studying for math tests, rather waiting until the test to ask questions about how to solve problems they do not understand, a few changes to Math Tests are being made. Today marks the last day students will be able to make corrections to a test or quiz in Applied Math. Students will still be given study guides that they will be able to use on the tests, so it would benefit students to use these study guides not only as a practice test, but as a place to note explanations for solutions.
Today's Assignment: due Friday- As a review, students are to explain the process (steps) in solving and solve all practice problems for Lessons 41 (p.188) through 51.

English - We finished our outlines for our Internet research paper. The outlines are looking good! I can't wait to start seeing the students create their rough drafts.
Literature - Due to the (unbelievably) high number of students out due to illness, we had time to catch those students up while spending some quality time reading. Students who were missing the "Dear Abby" letters had time on the computer to finish those. Other students who were missing assignments also had time to work. Many students enjoyed some quiet time reading as they explored a new novel. This day was treated like our Monday IMC reading days. Students could lose points by not choosing to do one of the activities stated above.

Art, 7th and 8th grade
Seventh graders are currently working on self-portrait drawings that will eventually become a mixed media piece using several different materials for the final project. Currently students are learning to draw with a technique called "blind contour" drawing. This exercise focuses the attention on the subject rather than on the paper. Students look at themselves in mirrors but are "blinded" to their paper as their sketchbooks are inside of a paper bag. They draw themselves without being able to look at the actual drawing. While many of the students find this technique strange, their drawings actually show much more detail and visual interest. The goal is to learn the skill of observation, a necessity in being an artist!
Eighth graders have just begun a new unit focusing on one of the design elements, that of shape. Students are to chose an organic shape (a shape based on nature) , which will then be the basis for a "stained glass window" piece (although they will be using tissue paper rather than glass). Like the 7th graders, they are also practicing with blind contours drawings as a starting point. This type of drawing exercise is a review for them from last year. In the coming week students can expect to be transferring their drawings onto the "metal" (black paper).
