Science 7

The tests that were taken on Thursday, 12/18/08, were handed back to the students. They looked over the tests and we talked about any questions/concerns in regards to the test. There are some students who have not taken the test, so I collected them at the end of the hour.

Hours 1, 2, and 4 were assigned the Chapter One Review and Assessment. They had time to work on it this afternoon and it is due when they return to school on Monday, 1/5/09.


Have a great winter break and enjoy your time off from school! Hopefully no more Christmas trees fall over inside the house :)

Social Studies 7

Most classes completed the Anthropology readings and correlating worksheets. There is no new assignment for over the break.

Applied Math 7

Corrected Lesson 40 together. Test 8 review in class. No homework, but remember to bring your reviews to use on the test. The test will be the first day we are back from break, due to last Friday's snow day.

Applied Math 8

Reviewed and corrected Lesson 3-7: Dividing Integers
Assignment: Complete the 3-7 Worksheet - more practice dividing integers. This can be turned in today, or kept until we are back from break.

Science 8

We had a pop quiz today on chapter three. With the number of snow days...we have gotten behind a bit. Students were allowed to use all notes/worksheets as notes on this quiz.

All extra credit is due today as well.

Chapter 3.4 review is due today (this was assigned last Thursday)

Students were also given time to complete the "meiosis/baby" activity we started last week Tuesday.

No regular science class on Tuesday due to our field trip! Have a great winter break!

Literature 8


Today was an organization day.

1. Chapter 7-12 review was due today. Any student who did not have it finished had time to complete it.

2. All missing/late work was announced today. It needs to be in by tomorrow A.M. at the latest.


Note:Although this is not the best time to "pause" our reading of "The Red Badge..." we have no choice. When we come back from winter break I will review where we are/what has happened and we will continue the story!


No Literature classes on Tuesday due to our field trip.

Social Studies 8


All present 8th grade students participated in the Search Survey during the first part of Social Studies class. This is a voluntary, confidential survey that asks students about some of their experiences. The surveys are scored by the Search Institute in Minneapolis, and results are then reported to the school as a whole.

If there was time after the survey, we reviewed the first two sections of Chapter 11 (Europe) and went over locations for the Chapter 11 Map Quiz which will focus on bodies of water and capital cities.

Updated grade sheets were posted this morning.

Today we begin our study of Europe. We discussed that Europe is a giant peninsula made up of many smaller peninsulas. We briefly reviewed important landforms such as the Alps, and natural resources found in Europe such as uranium, hydroelectric power, and geothermal power.

Students are to read Section 2 (Classical Greece and Rome) and complete the Europe map IN CLASS.

Today we discussed the assignment that was given yesterday in class, the Chapter 1, section 4 assessment. We also talked about the pixel pictures that were done by the students.
The remainder of the period was spent review the chapter...as a reminder, we have a test on Chapter ONE scheduled for this Thursday, 12/18/08.

Social Studies 7

Yesterday we started a new unit, Anthropology. Both yesterday and today we began introductions to the topic and the students worked on Reading Summaries in class.

Algebra

Lesson 4.7, pages 252-255. Problems 20-36 even, 44-48, and 52-66. Test and note check on Monday.

7th Grade Math

Chapter 3.3 Meiosis assignment was corrected. We discussed meiosis and our partner activity. Students will be pairing up, determining their traits, simulate meiosis and produce an "offspring" sharing the traits from the "parents". Any genetic disorders will be researched.

Continuing with talking about longitude, latitude, the prime meridian, etc. - we corrected and discussed the GRS 1.2 about the Models of Earth.


The students also read a brief passage on technology, GPS, pixels, digitizing and more. The assignment was to complete the key terms/concepts for 1.3.

Social Studies 7

Today was opportunity for a few students to take a retest for the Sociology test. Students needed to hand in the correctives and in Mrs. Moran's class, had to have the first test signed by a parent/guardian turned in today.
No further assignment that needs to be done at home tonight.

The students were given their test back today. We reviewed the test in class, and they were handed back in. The students that earned an 80% or lower have an opportunity for a retake. In order to qualify for the retake, the students must complete the corrections packet (using complete sentences and following all directions). Also, Mrs. Moran's class has to have their test signed if student earned below a 75%

Health 7

Students took their ALcohol, and Other Drug Awareness unit test in class.
Permission slips for Human Growth and Development were due today. If they are not returned by Wed. students will not be able to remain in class and will be given an alternate assignment.

Health 8

Check, call, care- action steps were covered inclass today. Students learned how to remove gloves to prevent disease transmission and how to cehck a conscious adult.

Students shoud continue working on their nutrition projects. The first and second three day food log comparison is due Wednesday.

Langauge Arts - 8 (12/8-12/12)

This week we are working on vocabulary words that deal with fairness and unfairness. The packet is due on Wednesday along with the quiz being on Thursday.

Monday we are going to be working on the nonverbal cues behind our voices: pitch, tone, volume, articulation, and accent. We will be doing some practice with different vocal cues and preparing for our speeches that begin Wednesday. Remember to bring in a monologue, children's story, or poem to read for the class. You will be graded on your interpretation of the reading using your body language, gestures, facial exressions, pitch, tone, volume, etc. The speech will be worth 50 points so make sure to practice!

The students finished their salt dough maps. They painted the models and map, made corresponding keys, and gave the various definitions and types of land forms (coastal plains, interior plains, mountains, mt. ranges, plateau, etc).

Today we reviewed Lesson 3-3 (the Coordinate Plane) and corrected yesterday's assignment.

Today's assignment is the 3-3 Packet which includes one page where students work with a map of the world - students can take an atlas home with them if they do not complete the assignment in class today.

We practiced Punnett squares yesterday...with students expected to complete some on their own. Today we will correct and discuss the correct answers. We will also pair up and predict offspring from "pea" traits as Mendel did about 200 years ago.

Today we discussed the reading assigned for today...chapters 1-2...in The Red Badge of courage. We had a mini history lesson on the civil war and labeled a U.S. map accordingly.

Science 7

Today the students had a land formation lab. They worked in groups to form the 3 main types of land formations that we are studying out of salt dough. They also made a map of the continental United States and showed its topography. The maps will dry over night and the students will continue to work on them tomorrow (making legends, painting, explaining the concepts of elevation as it is related to relief, and more).

Social Studies 7

We discussed the review part 2 for tomorrow's test. The students were given the two review assignments that were completed and corrected in class to use as a study guide for tomorrow's test. These reviews must be turned in tomorrow in order to receive full credit.

7th Grade Math

Lesson 4-3, pages 162-163. Problems 4-41. Extra credit due tomorrow.

Social Studies 8


Today we reviewed ALL sections of Chapter 9 for the Quiz on Monday. We also reviewed the Chapter 9 map for the Map Quiz tomorrow. Remember, the note check is also tomorrow, so make sure all your study guides are filled in.
Students were given a 10 question vocabulary worksheet as an in-class assignment - these should have been turned in before leaving.

The last 15 minutes of class time were given for students to study for the map quiz and the chapter quiz.

Parents, if you are concerned that you haven't seen any social studies homework, maps and study guides can be taken home. Quiz questions come right off the study guides, so if you would like to help your child study for Monday's quiz, have them bring home their study guides home and go over that information with them.

Pre-Algebra

Family and Consumer Education - 8th Grade

The students have begun their Food Service Unit in both 2nd and 3rd hours. They should be reviewing their vocabulary of cooking terms and equivalents from last year. We will be working toward our food service simulation which should be hold after the new year.

The students in 1st hour will be studying the qualities of employable teens and working on their Architectural Design unit.

Science 8

We corrected and discussed G. Mendel and vocabulary questions 1-15. The students went into the computer lab to complete a genetic web lab. No homework!

We began reading "The Red Badge of Courage" today starting only with the introduction. The students were asked to define bravery and answer a few questions.

Algebra

Graphing Linear Equations :) Lesson 4.2, pages 214-215. Problems 16-64 even.

Health 8

Students handed in their food log and graphs today as well as suggestions for diet improvements. Students should be keeping track of their food intake for a three day period, implementing their suggestions. The food log should be completed by Tuesday, Dec. 9.

Students also completed their Nutrition Unit test in class today.

All should continue working on their semester health goal.

Health 7

Studens learned about inhalant abuse and how to keep themselves safe when around toxic fumes.

Today we reviewed Chapter 9, Section 3: Colombia and Venezuela as well as reviewing Sections 1 and 2 for the quiz on Monday.
Students were given back their Chapter 9 maps and we went over the places on the quiz using the new overhead. The Chapter 9 Map Quiz and Note Check are on Friday.
Assignment: Read Sections 4-5 (Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and the Southern Cone) and complete the notes. Study all notes and the Chapter 9 map for upcoming quizzes!

Science 7

We are starting a new chapter today...as well as using a new book! We are now studying about the Earth's surface. We're reading section 1.1 today in class and discussing the main ideas and terms.

We will be talking about topography (elevation, relief) and land forms/regions (plains, plateaus, and mountain)

Social Studies 7

We are continuing to review for our upcoming test on Friday 12/5/08. Today students will begin a new review on Sociology.
Yesterday students received information in regards to options for this units "projects". They are not mandatory, but are needed in order to gain an A in the class. These projects are due this Friday.

Language Arts - 8 (12/2-12/5)

This week in language arts the vocabulary schedule will be different. The packet will be due Thursday, December 4th, and the quiz will be on Friday, December 5th.

Friday we will go to the library after the quiz, so make sure to bring your library books because they are due on the 5th!

This week we are beginning a unit on nonverbal communication. We will be learning the importance of posture, facial expressions, body language and vocal cues. The students will be doing group pantomines this week and other activities to enhance their understanding of nonverbal communication. The final assessment for this unit will begin next week and it will involve a nonverbal speech where students individually read a monologue.

Essays were due November 25th, but there are still a few who need to turn in their paper. Major assignments go down one letter grade for every day late.

Social Studies 8


Today we reviewed Chapter 9 (Middle America and Spanish-Speaking South America) Sections 1 and 2 about Central America and the Caribbean. The Chapter 9 schedule is on the board - the map quiz and note check will be on Friday, and the Chapter 9 quiz on Monday. Students are reminded to review their notes and maps daily.

In class work: Complete the Chapter 9 map and TURN IN before you leave

Assignment: Read Section 3 (273-277) about Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador and complete the notes.

Students worked in computer lab on food graphs for their nutrition project. Students can access information at www.mypyramid.gov .
Graphs should have been completed today. Suggestions for improving the diet, along with the food diary and graphs are due on 12/2.
Students should also continue working on their semester health goal and tracking their progress in their journals.
Don't forget Nutrition Unit test on 12/2. It will be an open notes/book test, so please have all materials organized and with you in class on Tuesday. You will not be permitted to go to your locker to retrieve materials.

Students worked on refusal skills in situations where there is group pressure to use.
Students who did not complete the Peer Pressure Interview with a parent should get that done and turned in.

Health 8

Students worked in computer lab on food graphs for their nutrition project. Students can access information at www.mypyramid.gov . Graphs should be completed by 12/1.

Students should also continue working on semester health goal and tracking their progress in their journals.

Don't forget Nutrition Unit test on 12/1. It will be an open notes/book test, so please have all materials organized and with you in class on Monday. You will not be permitted to go to your locker to retrieve materials.

We have completed our Precipitation/Storms unit, so the students are watching the movie Twister. The movie brings up some great points of conversation, especially (so far) when they are talking about the Fujita scale, the diameter of various tornadoes and precipitation that may accompany the storm.

Social Studies 7

We have been discussing Unit 4, Sociology for the past few weeks. Today, students began a series of different reviews for an upcoming test. This assignment was done in class. Quite a few students completed the worksheet, those that did not finish will be given some time to complete the assignment before we discuss it as a class.

Language Arts - 8 (11/24-11/25)

Today was the last day in the lab to type the final copy of the essay. Tomorrow is the day to turn in your paper and receive full credit. Make sure you hand me your paper personally either before or after school since we will not have normal class periods due to the field trip.

Students learned what internal pressure is and refusal skills for handling internal pressure. If handout is not finished in class, it should be completed for homework.

Health 8

Students took notes on health risks of being over and under weight. After students were given time in class to work on converting the food they ate (from their food log entries) to servings and food groups. If students did not finish converting in class, this must be done outside of class and is due 11/20.

Nutrition Unit test is on Nov 25.

11/25 comparison graphs for actual servings eaten compared to the recommended daily servings are also due.

Applied Math 8

Students were given the entire period to complete the Chapter 2 Review. This review is due at the end of the hour. Students were also encouraged to complete and submit missing work to help raise their grades.
Chapter 2 Test is tomorrow.

Social Studies 8

Today we discussed the content from Chapter 7 that will be on the Unit Test (after Chapter 10). Students were encouraged to write this content down, rather than trying to remember it all in their heads. We also discussed Chapter 8 (Mexico) Sections 1-2. Students were given back the Chapter 7 Quizzes - the average grade was in the C range - a little disappointing considering that we go over the questions on the quiz every day in class.
Assignment: Students were to complete and hand in the Chapter 8 map of Mexico. If this is not turned in by the end of the hour it will be counted as late. Students were also assigned to read Section 3 and complete the notes for tomorrow. If Section 3 is not completed in class today, there should be time tomorrow to finish up.
Reminders: The Map Quiz and Note Check are on Thursday. The Chapter 8 Quiz is on Monday.

Students can bring their grades up by turning in these assignments. This way, students have a more realistic view of their grade should they choose not to turn something in.

Science 7

The assignment from yesterday was collected (#13-22) - then we took our knowledge to the computer lab! Students viewed information from http://www.weatherwizkids.com/, where it talked about all of the subjects that we are learning about. It also took them to various links to see how a hurricane is tracked, the # of tornadoes in a certain area, various clouds and more! A student brought in this website and it was great! We also looked at the storm chasers website. There it showed the formation of a tornado (the kids got to form their own) and pictures of the damage caused.

Just a friendly reminder that the next test will be on Wednesday (11/19/08). I've had it on my board and have been telling the kids all week - I've just forgotten to post it. Sorry!

Today we went over Lesson 2-8: Misleading Statistics. Students were given an in-class assignment (due at the end of the hour) of #3-13. We completed #3-8 as a class, and each student needed to complete #9-13 independently.
Students were made aware of the Chapter 2 Test coming up next Wednesday. A list of skills needed for the test were posted on the board.

We watched an episode (or part of an episode) of Storm Chasers from the Discovery Channel. It's a great show that talks about the power and language of tornadoes - just like we're doing in class. Today they were able to see baseball size hail fall and the impact of tornadoes!

We started reading and discussing Chapter 3, section 2 - Storms. We read through the section today and had some great personal stories shared in our discussions! The students started an assignment in class, they are to finish questions 1-12 for tomorrow.

We began chapter two today. I assigned independent study work due to the W.K.C.E. testing schedule. All students should complete their work by Friday...at the start of class. We did Chapter 2.1 together. If students plan and use work time properly there should be little to no outside of class work time needed.

Science 7

Today due to operator confusion ;) we had a change in plans. We reviewed the events from Friday and that lead right into the reading of section 2.5, Precipitation. Students were actively involved in discussions! There was an assignment, pg 65 the section 5 assessment. Students were given class time to complete this, most finished. If not, it is due tomorrow in their notebooks.

Today students completed readings 4-9 in needed. We then discussed the readings and corrected the assignments from readings 1 to reading 9.

State Testing Week


W.K.C.E. testing begins tomorrow. Make sure to get plenty of rest, eat a good breakfast, and try your best!

Testing will take place Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during morning classes.

We took the book test today. The students were allowed to use their character charts as notes. We will watch the movie...a 1945 Black & White classic account of the story on Friday.


FYI...I will not have literature classes Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday due to the WKCE testing. Classes will resume on Friday.

Special Announcement


All this week, November 10-14, homerooms will be participating in the Student Council Food Drive. Each homeroom has been assigned a specific item to collect. They are as follows:

Tuna – Moran/Leal
Peas – Rehm/Smith
Peaches – Lewis/Wolf

The top 3 homerooms with the most food collected per student (number of cans divided by number of students - to be fair to smaller homerooms) will receive participation posters that will count toward the end of the year pizza party!

Today we reviewed Box and Whisker Plots.

Today we reviewed and discussed Sections 3-4 of Chapter 7 - the early civilizations, colonizations, and independence. We also reviewed for the Chapter 7 quiz which will be next Monday. Students were reminded that the Chapter 7 MAP quiz is on Friday and that it is their responsibility to study their maps for the quiz.
We also had a short discussion about Veteran's Day (tomorrow) and students were encouraged to wear red, white, and blue to show their support for our veterans.

Science 7

As a class, we completed our discussions on the Water in the Atmosphere - during which we talked about the water cycle, humidity and relative humidity, and various types of cloud formations.

Students shared their projects today in class and were able to hear about the different choices that they had not performed. We also looked online at the importance of clean groundwater and how that affects us here in Wisconsin.

Finally, some classes had a few extra minutes and we played the Droplet Game. Students had to answer questions about the water cycle in order to play a game that moved "droplet" through the various stages of the water cycle. Many students asked for the link, so this is where to find it:


You do not have to download the game, you can just play it online.

The only homework students will have is if they did not finish the tic-tac-toe assignment that was given on Monday.
