Discussion was had regarding the poor map quiz scores that were received for the Canada Map quiz. Every student is assigned an outline map at the beginning of a chapter with certain locations to label. These are then graded. It is the STUDENT's responsibility to correct any mis-labels and then use that assignment to study for the map quiz. There is always time at the end of class for this to occur. Also, these maps can be taken home every day to study! In the past, when we had an overhead, we would review features on the overhead map all together. The fact that we are currently without an overhead does not take away from the fact that each students has their very own map to study daily.
We also discussed that for Unit 3: Latin America and South America - we will be covering 4 chapters in a very short amount of time. Things will be somewhat different. Students will have 2 sections a day to read in class, but study guides have been modified to include just notes. Also, there will be fewer assignments to turn in for a grade for each chapter. There will be a 40-question, multiple choice chapter quiz at the end of each chapter, and a Unit Test at the end of the unit. There will still be note checks and map quizzes for each chapter.
Chapter 7's schedule was put on the board today and is as follows:
11/6 (TH) - Outline Map - due in class today/ Read Sections 1-2
11/7 (F) - Read Sections 3-4
11/10 (M) - Review Chapter 7 and the Map for quizzes
11/11-11/13- No Social Studies Classes due to WKCE testing - a great opportunity to study those maps!
11/14 (F) - Chapter 7 Map Quiz, Note Check, Chapter 7 Review
11/17 (M) - Chapter 7 Quiz, begin Chapter 8
Today's assignment: Complete the Chapter 7 Outline Map IN CLASS and turn in. Read Chapter 7, Physical Geography and History of Latin America, Sections 1-2 (p. 196-211) and complete the notes.
