Students will be working to complete a civil war timeline. Use Chapter 16 (p. 510-542) to list important events and battles (battles need to include who won (union or confederate victory) and the significance. So an example would be the Battle of Gettysburg - a Union victory - turned the tide against the Confederates. A rough draft of this timeline will be due Thursday. Thursday and Friday we will be in the computer lab so students can use either Timeliner or Inspiration to complete their projects. The timelines will be due at the end of the hour on Friday.

On Friday the students received another similar project as to the tic-tac-toe. They are to pick two additional activities or labs to complete along with the chapter's review and reinforce sections. It was originally due this coming Friday, but I pushed it back. The final project will be due on Tuesday March 17, 2009.
The students received the permission slip to go the the Milwaukee Public Museum to participate in JASON and to view the Titanic Exhibit. I need these permission slips back by Monday March 16, 2009.
Students also received an extra credit lab if they chose today. They need to create a sturgeon/shark made of 50 grams of water proof clay. These need to be completed and returned to school on Monday March 16th so that we can race them on Tuesday. The top three winners will race them against various other students from other schools at JASON.

Students are now looking at the question, "Did South Carolina have the right to secede from the Union?" Students were assigned to be pro (yes) or con (no).
In a Structured Academic Controversy, both sides become familiar with their assigned stance, and then teach their stance to the other side.
Today, students were given materials to help them become familiar with their stance, as well as time to work with their teams in order to teach their side.
There is no homework from today. The SAC will continue tomorrow.

Social Studies 8
Today students were given background information about states' rights. Students had the entire period to read this information and answer 6 questions. The information is higher than 8th grade level reading, so students were advised to read slowly and carefully. Students were encouraged to make notes about parts of the reading they didn't understand. These questions could then be discussed with their group members. It is important for students to fully understand the concept of the states' rights issue in order to participate in the Structured Academic Controversy that will take place over the remainder of the week.
