Pre-Algebra

Lesson 9-7. Pages 452-453. Problems 5-12 and 14-22. Quiz on Thursday, test on Friday.

Science 8


Today we took notes on 3.3 Fungi. The students had an opportunity to view fungi growing on bread. Yum!

A review assignment was given and is due tomorrow.

Literature 8


We read chapter 9 today in class. A quiz on chapters 1-9 is scheduled for Wednesday...tomorrow!

Applied Math 7

Students worked independently on the review for Test 14. Test 14 will be tomorrow.

Social Studies 8

Students will be working to complete a civil war timeline. Use Chapter 16 (p. 510-542) to list important events and battles (battles need to include who won (union or confederate victory) and the significance. So an example would be the Battle of Gettysburg - a Union victory - turned the tide against the Confederates. A rough draft of this timeline will be due Thursday. Thursday and Friday we will be in the computer lab so students can use either Timeliner or Inspiration to complete their projects. The timelines will be due at the end of the hour on Friday.

Science 7

On Friday the students received another similar project as to the tic-tac-toe. They are to pick two additional activities or labs to complete along with the chapter's review and reinforce sections. It was originally due this coming Friday, but I pushed it back. The final project will be due on Tuesday March 17, 2009.
The students received the permission slip to go the the Milwaukee Public Museum to participate in JASON and to view the Titanic Exhibit. I need these permission slips back by Monday March 16, 2009.
Students also received an extra credit lab if they chose today. They need to create a sturgeon/shark made of 50 grams of water proof clay. These need to be completed and returned to school on Monday March 16th so that we can race them on Tuesday. The top three winners will race them against various other students from other schools at JASON.

Social Studies 7

We picked up again in the History chapter. The students took notes today and will continue tomorrow.

7th Grade Math

Lesson 7-5. Page 315. Problems 13-39 and 41-47.

Today students received various choices of projects to do for the Chapter 4 - A trip through geological time. In total, the students are responsible for choosing 2 options, as well as completing the middle diamond assignment. So, all together, they need to complete 3 assignments/projects for this chapter. These are to be turned in a week from today, Friday March 13th.
Students were also able to see their test scores.

Social Studies 8

Today students completed their Structured Academic Controversy (S.A.C.) around the question, "Did South Carolina have the right to secede from the Union?"
Assignment: Write a rough draft of a response paper. You must have a rough draft on Monday or you will not be allowed to type. It was suggested that students use the following outline:
I. Introduction/Bacground on the question
II. Explain the pro side (yes)
III. Explain the con side (no)
IV. Explain your personal opinion and why you have that opinion

Students learned about the possible immediate, short and long term effects of tobacco and marijuana use.

Observing Protists and other microscopic water life today. A Plantlike/animal-like protists reading was assigned.

Social Studies 8

Students reviewed the issue of states' rights. What is it? The debate over who has the ultimate authority in the United States - the states or the federal government.
Students are now looking at the question, "Did South Carolina have the right to secede from the Union?" Students were assigned to be pro (yes) or con (no).
In a Structured Academic Controversy, both sides become familiar with their assigned stance, and then teach their stance to the other side.
Today, students were given materials to help them become familiar with their stance, as well as time to work with their teams in order to teach their side.
There is no homework from today. The SAC will continue tomorrow.

Today students were introduced to the JASON Project. We will be working on this hands on learning activity for the next 2 weeks.

Social Studies 7

The students continued to work on their speech for tomorrow. If they did not finish in class, then it is to be completed at home. We will start the speeches tomorrow and most likely finish on Friday.

Science 8

Protist lab. We attempted to view microscopic water life...although a bit early in the season...random observations were made. A protozoa packet was assigned.

Literature 8


We corrected the review assignment for chapters 3-4 and read chapter 5 today.

Social Studies 8

Today students were given background information about states' rights. Students had the entire period to read this information and answer 6 questions. The information is higher than 8th grade level reading, so students were advised to read slowly and carefully. Students were encouraged to make notes about parts of the reading they didn't understand. These questions could then be discussed with their group members. It is important for students to fully understand the concept of the states' rights issue in order to participate in the Structured Academic Controversy that will take place over the remainder of the week.

Students reviewed the ideas of the Wilmot Proviso and Popular Sovereignty as they related to allowing or banning slavery from the territories in the West. Today, students identified the results of the Compromise of 1850, and compared key peoples' ideas about slavery in the territories (including David Wilmot, Jefferson Davis, Henry Clay, and John C. Calhoun).

HOMEWORK: Complete the packet including a review of Section 1, a biography of Dred Scott, and graphing economic differences between the north and the south. This can be turned in today if completed, otherwise it is due on Monday.

A Chapter two review took place today. I summarized the chapter and we then played Vocabulary Bingo.
The test is tomorrow. The students may use the vocabulary terms they defined on the test as notes.
I also provided an optional extra credit assignment: Pgs. 69-70 (1-21). This will help them review the chapter too!

We began "And Then There Were None" today. Each student was given a character chart to keep pace with the story and events as they occur.

Today students worked in groups to create mini-posters that compare and contrast the economies, populations, and military advantages/disadvantages of the North and the South prior to the Civil War.
