Social Studies 8

Discussion was had regarding the poor map quiz scores that were received for the Canada Map quiz. Every student is assigned an outline map at the beginning of a chapter with certain locations to label. These are then graded. It is the STUDENT's responsibility to correct any mis-labels and then use that assignment to study for the map quiz. There is always time at the end of class for this to occur. Also, these maps can be taken home every day to study! In the past, when we had an overhead, we would review features on the overhead map all together. The fact that we are currently without an overhead does not take away from the fact that each students has their very own map to study daily.
We also discussed that for Unit 3: Latin America and South America - we will be covering 4 chapters in a very short amount of time. Things will be somewhat different. Students will have 2 sections a day to read in class, but study guides have been modified to include just notes. Also, there will be fewer assignments to turn in for a grade for each chapter. There will be a 40-question, multiple choice chapter quiz at the end of each chapter, and a Unit Test at the end of the unit. There will still be note checks and map quizzes for each chapter.
Chapter 7's schedule was put on the board today and is as follows:
11/6 (TH) - Outline Map - due in class today/ Read Sections 1-2
11/7 (F) - Read Sections 3-4

Today the 7th grade began their WKCE testing. There were not any new assignments given today, as not every class met. On Monday they were given a tic-tac-toe worksheet related to 2.4. To see the instructions, please look at the older post.
These assignments will be due on Friday.

Applied Math 8

Today was the Chapter 2 Mid-Chapter Test. Most students completed this in about half the class period. The rest of class time was given for making up late work, which will turn to zeros tomorrow if not submitted.

Langauge Arts - 8 (11/3-11/7)

This week in language arts, we have vocabulary centered around the theme of dialect. The packet is due Wednesday with a quiz on Thursday.

We have also started working on an expository essay unit. By Wednesday, a topic should be chosen and then Thursday we will work on developing a thesis statement. We are also reviewing all the parts of a standard essay and working on effective attention getters, orders, formulas, and final thoughts. By Friday, outlines will be distributed to allow independent work at home.

Social Studies 8

Today was the Canada Map Quiz and the Chapter 6 note check. A reminder to parents, notes must be COMPLETE for students to receive a 100. There is no excuse for not having study guides filled in completely as we do go over them in class together. Students whose study guides were not complete or were missing part or all of their notes will recieve a zero. It is unfortunate that this will bring down some quarter grades, but we are 6 chapters into the semester - it's time to participate.
As a class we reviewed for the Canada Test which is tomorrow. Students were given the essay questions that will be on the test and these questions were discussed together today.
Assignment: study for the Chapter 6 (Canada) test tomorrow.
