Family and Consumer Education - Grade 7

The Seventh Grade students are starting their Child Care Unit. Any "babysitting" they do in the next few weeks will count as extra credit toward their quartter grade. Just send in a note signed by a parent to receive credit.

Vocational Education -8th grade-

All Eighth grade students are required to complete their job shadowing experience by the end of April. Forms and an explanation were sent home in the semester report card mailing. Please call if there are any questions. Students are finding this to be an eye-opening experience. I hope we can all support them!

Social Studies 8

We finished the lecture about U.S. History from the Civil War to WWI today by talking about the Spanish American War and the Panama Canal. Students were then introduced to our project that will take us into spring break. Students were allowed to choose their own groups, or work individually to research and present any topic presented in the lecture. Students will give a more in-depth look at any of the topics addressed. Students are also allowe to choose their presentation method - examples were newscasts, talk shows, skits, or even interpretive dance. Students were encouraged to be as creative as possible when planning their presentations.
Tomorrow is the only day students will have in the computer lab for additional research. Thursday and Friday will be work days, and presentations will be next week.

Science 7

Students are continuing to work in their new groups. Each group was given a specific topic that they would become the experts on. The groups will present the information in the coming weeks (most after spring break). In order to explain and teach their topic, the students are creating a visual aid, a demonstration, a worksheet, a review and a quiz/test. Each student received a calendar that outlines when each aspect is to be turned in. We have been working all last week and will continue to do so. We were in the computer lab on Friday and today with one more scheduled day next week Monday.
Tomorrow the visual aid, demonstration write-up, and notes must be completed. On Friday, the worksheet and script will be turned in.

Social Studies 7

Today those students that earned 80% or below on his/her test turned in the corrective packet today.
Students started a new Unit today - Geography. They had a pre-"test" on what they know about the continents/oceans around the world.

Social Studies 8

Students began work on the Civil War Portrait Assignment. This will result in a one-page mini biography about a person related to the Civil War. Each hour's projects will then be made into a book to share. Class time today and tomorrow will be spent researching the people and writing the rough draft. Final drafts are due Friday, at the end of the hour. Plagiarizing will not be accepted in any way, shape, or form. Students were made extremely aware of this today. ANY plagiarizing by students will result in a zero (0) grade.

Ms. Francoeur will be at a conference next Monday and Tuesday (March 16-17). Social Studies students will be viewing an A&E Biography on Abraham Lincoln and completing a study guide. This study guide will be graded, so what you put down is important. Obnoxious behavior when a sub is present will result in Ms. Francoeur's wrath upon her return....so be good! =)

We are continuing with our discussion about JASON. We have been learning about right whales and the interferences of noise pollution and human involvment. Today the students began working in groups to design a PSA (Public Service Announcement) about a specific threatened or endangered animal. The student will be writing and script and preforming/taping their commercial. They may need to do brief research this weekend about their choosen animal.

Yesterday we began our sound lab outside. The students listened for ambient noises and discussed other possible variables that would interfere with their ability to hear the sounds. It was clear to the students that they had to listen harder for the whale sounds as compared to man-made sounds. Today we finished up our JASON Mission 5 readings.
As a reminder, sturgeon extra credit is due on Monday 3/16/09 as well as the permission slips.

Students will be working to complete a civil war timeline. Use Chapter 16 (p. 510-542) to list important events and battles (battles need to include who won (union or confederate victory) and the significance. So an example would be the Battle of Gettysburg - a Union victory - turned the tide against the Confederates. A rough draft of this timeline will be due Thursday. Thursday and Friday we will be in the computer lab so students can use either Timeliner or Inspiration to complete their projects. The timelines will be due at the end of the hour on Friday.

Science 7

On Friday the students received another similar project as to the tic-tac-toe. They are to pick two additional activities or labs to complete along with the chapter's review and reinforce sections. It was originally due this coming Friday, but I pushed it back. The final project will be due on Tuesday March 17, 2009.
The students received the permission slip to go the the Milwaukee Public Museum to participate in JASON and to view the Titanic Exhibit. I need these permission slips back by Monday March 16, 2009.
Students also received an extra credit lab if they chose today. They need to create a sturgeon/shark made of 50 grams of water proof clay. These need to be completed and returned to school on Monday March 16th so that we can race them on Tuesday. The top three winners will race them against various other students from other schools at JASON.

Students were also able to see their test scores.

Today students completed their Structured Academic Controversy (S.A.C.) around the question, "Did South Carolina have the right to secede from the Union?"
Assignment: Write a rough draft of a response paper. You must have a rough draft on Monday or you will not be allowed to type. It was suggested that students use the following outline:
I. Introduction/Bacground on the question
II. Explain the pro side (yes)
III. Explain the con side (no)
IV. Explain your personal opinion and why you have that opinion

Students reviewed the issue of states' rights. What is it? The debate over who has the ultimate authority in the United States - the states or the federal government.
Students are now looking at the question, "Did South Carolina have the right to secede from the Union?" Students were assigned to be pro (yes) or con (no).
In a Structured Academic Controversy, both sides become familiar with their assigned stance, and then teach their stance to the other side.
Today, students were given materials to help them become familiar with their stance, as well as time to work with their teams in order to teach their side.
There is no homework from today. The SAC will continue tomorrow.

Today students were introduced to the JASON Project. We will be working on this hands on learning activity for the next 2 weeks.

Social Studies 7

The students continued to work on their speech for tomorrow. If they did not finish in class, then it is to be completed at home. We will start the speeches tomorrow and most likely finish on Friday.

Science 8

Protist lab. We attempted to view microscopic water life...although a bit early in the season...random observations were made. A protozoa packet was assigned.

We corrected the review assignment for chapters 3-4 and read chapter 5 today.

Today students were given background information about states' rights. Students had the entire period to read this information and answer 6 questions. The information is higher than 8th grade level reading, so students were advised to read slowly and carefully. It is important for students to fully understand the concept of the states' rights issue in order to participate in the Structured Academic Controversy that will take place over the remainder of the week.
